Vols looking at Favre fan

Tennessee's football staff is taking a look at a young quarterback cast from the Brett Favre mold.

Nate Sowers is a 6-2, 195-pound dual-threat QB from Martinsburg (W.Va.) High School. He's known as a ''gun slinger'' type who displays a real passion for the game.

''Brett Favre is my idol,'' Sowers told Don Callahan of TheInsiders.com. ''I love how he plays the game. He loves to play the game. He goes out and he's out there smiling. A big lineman gets in his face and he doesn't care. I'm not as extreme as him, but that's the way I like to play. I just want to be considered as a player that just loves to play the game and has fun while he is out there.''

West Virginia appears to be the team to beat for Sowers' commitment. The Mountaineers already have offered a scholarship.

''I kind of want to stay local,'' Sowers said. ''Plus I'm always looking for an in-state school; keep the talent in West Virginia. Probably my number one choice is a West Virginia school.''

Still, he says he's getting interest from Maryland, Penn State, Tennessee and Marshall.

Tennessee signed one of the nation's top rated dual threat quarterbacks in Brent Schaeffer.
