Vols like Louisiana safety

A rangy safety from the Bayou has caught the attention of Tennessee recruiters.

Gary Riggs is a 6-3, 205-pounder from Jennings (La.) High School. Blessed with 4.56 speed over 40 yards, he recorded 75 tackles and three interceptions as a junior last fall, earning honorable mention all-state recognition.

He will also see action at quarterback as a senior next fall but Riggs' college future clearly rests on the defensive side of the ball.

''Gary is very athletic and he has a nose for the ball," Jennings head coach Rusty Phelps told Sonny Shipp of TheInsiders.com. ''He has great timing and he really knows the game.''

Riggs attended LSU's Junior Day and spoke with head coach Nick Saban but left Baton Rouge without a scholarship offer

''He said Saban told him he would really love for him to come to LSU and play football,'' Phelps told The Insiders.

Riggs concedes that LSU ''leads the way'' but says he also likes Florida, Texas and Miami. They all have good football programs, and it seems like they put a lot of people in the (National Football) League. It looks like their football teams stick together as a family.''

Other schools that are showing keen interest include Tennessee, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Purdue.
