Friday Practice Report

The Vols first spring practice was a spirited one Friday. The players looked excited to start a new season. "There was good enthusiasm for the first day," head coach Phillip Fulmer said.

C.J. Leak and Rick Clausen took the majority of the snaps on the day. Leak looked very good throwing deep routes; he didn't have many completions but showed accuracy and good arm strength. "C. J. did a good job, and Trooper (Taylor) added a lot of energy to the offensive side," head coach Fulmer said.

Speaking of Trooper Taylor, the new running backs coach was singing "Rocky Top" near the end of practice and was very energized during practice. He brings an energy that was absent last season. Gerald Riggs and Cedric Houston looked hungry and ready to get the season started.

The receivers looked a bit rusty, but it was the first day of practice. Jason Swain and Chris Hannon ran excellent deep routes with good speed, and could be the leaders in a group of talented pass catchers this season.

Jason Allen was real vocal in practice and picked off a badly thrown pass by Rick Clausen. Vol fans will know more about the question of the secondary when the players start hitting on Tuesday.

The Vols hold their second spring practice on Saturday at 2:30 a Haslem Field
