Vols chasing Childs star

One of the top linebacker prospects in Arkansas is taking a look at Tennessee.

Alex Childs is a 6-0, 215-pounder middle linebacker from El Dorado High School. He used his 4.7 speed to register 88 tackles, three sacks and 20 tackles for loss last fall. A weight-room fanatic, he bench-presses 330 pounds and squats 505. He also is a good student who should have no problem qualifying for admission to college. He's looking mostly at schools from the SEC and the Big XII.

''I went to three or four LSU games last year, and I went to three Arkansas games last year,'' Childs told Scott Kennedy of TheInsiders.com. ''My favorite team growing up though was Arkansas. My Top five right now is Arkansas, LSU, Oklahoma, Texas A&M, and Tennessee.''

Childs said Tennessee, Arkansas, Vanderbilt and Auburn invited him to their spring games, adding: ''but I haven't gotten to go to any yet.''

Tennessee's starting middle linebacker, Kevin Simon, will be a senior in 2005. His departure would leave an opening in 2006 that Alex Childs just might be destined to fill.
