Great news on O&W Game

Fans who are tired of lopsided Orange & White football games will be glad to know that this Saturday's game should be a lot more competitive.

Head coach Phillip Fulmer has scrapped the ''best against the rest'' format that in recent years saw first- and second-teamers overpowering third- and fourth-teamers. Instead, he's letting six Vols conduct a ''draft'' of the available talent. The six are offensive tackle Michael Munoz, linebacker Kevin Burnett, defensive end Parys Haralson, defensive back Jason Allen, guard Rob Smith and defensive end Turk McBride.

Munoz and Burnett were team captains as juniors last season. Smith has been tabbed Most Improved Offensive Player of the spring and McBride the Most Improved Defensive Player of the spring.

With the talent spread more evenly between the Orange and White squads, Saturday's game should be much more evenly matched than its predecessors. That will give fans a better idea of the relative strengths of C.J. Leak and Rick Cl ausen, who have waged a nip-and-tuck battle for the first-team quarterback job all spring.

The Orange & White kickoff is set for 3 p.m. Gates open at 12:45. Fans Day will be held from 1 to 2, with UT fans getting to meet their favorite players on Shields-Watkins Field for photos and autographs. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children.
