Vols check out in-state RB

A productive but undersized in-state running back has shown up on Tennessee's recruiting radar.

Roger Herndon is a 6-0, 175-pound junior who rushed for 2,142 yards and 31 touchdowns last fall for Greenbrier High School. Blessed with 4.5 speed, he also caught 10 passes for 114 yards and three more TDs.

Herndon earned all-state honors for his efforts and was a finalist for Mr. Football recognition in the 3A classification. He is getting feelers from Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Auburn, Ole Miss and Tennessee Tech. He attended Vandy's spring game on March 20.

''I'm most interested in Vanderbilt," he told VandyMania.com. ''They have shown the most interest in me, and their academics are extremely attractive to me. They're also close to home. Others are just on a wait-and-see basis.''

Herndon plans to attend camps at Vanderbilt and at Tennessee this summer.

At 175 pounds, Herndon may have to put on some weight to play tailback at the collegiate level. Otherwise, he projects to be a wide receiver or defensive back.
