Vol netters advance in NCAAs

TULSA, Okla. -- Tennessee's Simon Rea and Damien Spizzo defeated the UC-Irvine team of Jonathan Endrikat and Brian Morton 6-4, 6-3 Thursday in the opening round of the NCAA Division I Men's Doubles Championships at the University of Tulsa Tennis Center.

With its straight-set round-of-32 win, the No. 9-ranked team of Rea and Spizzo extends its unbeaten streak to nine consecutive matches, dating to April 2. The No. 22-ranked Anteaters tandem marked the ninth ranked team Rea and Spizzo have beaten this season.

''Simon (Rea) and Damien (Spizzo) played a great match [Thursday] in tough, windy conditions,'' Tennessee associate head coach Chris Mahony said. ''They were sharp in everything they did. It was an excellent result against a UC Irvine team that had some huge wins this year.''

Rea and Spizzo now own an overall record of 12-4 (.750) this season. They advance to face the No. 15-ranked team of Zoltan Csanadi and Izak van der Merwe from Old Dominion Friday in the round of 16.

The Monarchs' top pairing, Csanadi and van der Merwe, reached the semifinals of last fall's ITA All-American Championships and also advanced to the finals of the 2003 ITA National Indoor Championships. They have been ranked as high as No. 3 in the country this season.

The NCAA doubles championships is contested under a best-of-three-set format, rather than the eight-game pro-set format used during regular season competition.
