Even with a linebacking corps that ranks among the 10 best nationally, Even with a linebacking corps that ranks among the 10 best nationally, Tennessee's overall defense is rated a lackluster 28th by Collegefootballnews.com. Interestingly enough, the Vol offense -- generally regarded as the weaker of UT's units -- is ranked No. 18 nationally by CFN.com (see note elsewhere on this site).

The Vol linebacking corps, led by potential All-Americans Kevin Simon and Kevin Burnett, is ranked No. 8 nationally. But the UT defensive line is rated No. 32 after losing 2003 starters Mondre Dickerson and Constantin Ritzmann. Tennessee's secondary -- minus 2003 starters Gibril Wilson, Rashad Baker and Jabari Greer -- is ranked No. 71 among the 117 NCAA Div. 1-A programs.

Louisiana State is ranked No. 1 nationally in overall defense by CFN.com, with fellow SEC powerhouse Georgia rated No. 4.
