UT among top RB schools

Few schools in college football can match Tennessee's running back lineage over the past 20 years. Jamal Lewis, Charlie Garner, Travis Henry, Little Man Stewart, Reggie Cobb, Chuck Webb, Johnnie Jones, Tony Thompson, Jay Graham and Travis Stephens were superior college backs. Lewis, Garner, Henry and Stewart have gone on to shine in the NFL, while Webb would've been an all-pro if not for a career-snuffing knee injury while at UT.

Pete Fiutak went back 35 years in ranking the top running back schools for collegefootballnews.com, and Tennessee just missed his top 10 for 1970-2004. Here are Fiutak's top 10:

1. Southern Cal
2. Auburn
3. Texas
4. Georgia
5. Ohio State
6. Penn State
7. Oklahoma
8. Wisconsin
9. Miami
10. Nebraska

Tennessee is ranked 11th and Florida 13th, giving the SEC four of the top 20 running back school in America over the past 35 years.

Fiutak lists Auburn's top five backs of the past 35 years (in order) as Bo Jackson, Cadillac Williams, Joe Cribbs, Brent Fullwood and James Brooks. The writer tabs Georgia's top five as Herschel Walker, Garrison Hearst, Rodney Hampton, Lars Tate and Robert Edwards.

Fiutak did not list the top five backs for his second 10. Instead he lists each team's ''Main Man.'' UT's main man, of course, was Jamal Lewis, now an all-pro with the NFL's Baltimore Ravens.
