Hoop Vols fall, 77-58

A near-perfect performance by Chris Lofton wasn't enough to offset a very imperfect performance by his Tennessee teammates Saturday night in Albuquerque.

Lofton, a hot-shooting freshman, hit 7 of 8 from the field -- including 5 of 5 from beyond the 3-point arc -- and finished with 19 points. The rest of the Vols struggled, however, as Tennessee suffered a 77-58 loss to New Mexico at ''The Pit.''

Scooter McFadgon chipped in 16 points for UT but sank just 1 of 8 shots from 3-point range. Interestingly enough, he was 4 of 5 inside the arc to finish 5 of 13 overall.

Brandon Crump was 1 of 5 from the floor and C.J. Watson 0 of 4. The other Tennessee starter, forward Jemere Hendrix, fouled out after just 15 minutes of action without attempting a field goal.

Danny Granger had 20 points and 3 blocked shots for New Mexico.

Tennessee hit an icy 26 percent from the field in the first half and trailed 29-17 at the break. The Vols warmed up to hit a sizzling 59.1 percent in the second half. Tennessee's defense was mediocre, however, forcing just 8 turnovers and allowing the Lobos to hit 49.1 percent from the floor.

The Vols, now 4-4, host Belmont Monday night.
