UT rips Coastal Carolina

Scooter McFadgon, the goat of Tennessee's recent loss to Nebraska, got a little redemption Sunday afternoon at Thompson-Boling Arena.

McFadgon, a senior captain who missed three free throws in the final 30 seconds that proved critical in Thursday night's one-point loss to the Cornhuskers, bounced back with 19 points -- all in the first half -- as the Vols hammered Coastal Carolina 83-51. McFadgon was red-hot in the first half, hitting 8 of 10 floor shots, including 2 of 4 from 3-point range.

As a team, Tennessee hit 20 of 30 field goal tries in the first half. The Big Orange outshot Coastal Carolina 67 to 27 percent from the field in those first 20 minutes and outrebounded the Chanticleers 24-12 en route to a 48-21 halftime lead. Tennessee scored the first two buckets of the second half, building the lead to 31 points (52-21). The Vols coasted home from there.

Chris Lofton added 12 points for Tennessee, while Brandon Crump chipped in 9 points and 10 rebounds.

Tennessee raced to an 11-2 lead on Sunday. A three-point play by McFadgon, a bucket by Lofton and a McFadgon 3 widened the gap to 17 points (21-4). At this point the Vols were nine of 10 from the floor, hitting a sizzling 90 percent as a team.

A Lofton bucket boosted the lead to 22 (30-8) with around 10 minutes left in the half. McFagdon hit a 3 and a short jumper as the lead swelled to 25 points (44-19) with just under 4:00 left to intermission.

Tennessee, 7-5, opens SEC play Wednesday night at Georgia. Coastal Carolina slips to 3-9 and stands 0-7 on the road.
