Buzz selects seven

Vol basketball coach Buzz Peterson thinks he has a seven-man rotation that can win in the Southeastern Conference ... at least for the time being.

When Tennessee opens SEC play Wednesday night at Georgia, Peterson expects most of the minutes will be divided among his five starters -- 6-10 Brandon Crump, 6-7 Andre Patterson, 6-5 Scooter McFadgon, 6-2 Chris Lofton and 6-2 C.J. Watson -- plus backups Major Wingate (6-10) and Dane Bradshaw (6-3).

''Our staff feels pretty good about where we are right now,'' Peterson said. ''Of course, we need the Wingates and the Bradshaws to give us good, quality minutes coming into the game.''

Forward Jemere Hendrix and three guards -- freshman JaJuan Smith, redshirt freshman Jordan Howell and senior Stanley Asumnu -- are still competing for playing time behind the top seven.

''I played a lot of guys early,'' Peterson conceded. ''With Wingate and Bradshaw (emerging as key backups), we have a rotation of seven. Will it stay like that? No, it won't, but that's the seven I'm looking at right now.

''If we get in foul trouble in the post, we've got Hendrix. If we get in foul trouble on the wing, it'll depend on how I feel at the time between Smith, Asumnu and Howell. Smith has been kind of the guy lately because he brings some energy on the defensive end for us.''
