A Major mystery

In one week, Major Wingate went from hero to zero.

Wingate scored a career-high 13 points in Tennessee's Jan. 22 loss to Louisville, then followed with a new career-high of 14 points in the Vols' Jan. 25 game with Kentucky. Based on those performances, the 6-10 Vol sophomore figured to have a field day last Saturday against an Auburn team whose tallest starter is 6-5.

It didn't happen, though. He made zero field goals (in two attempts) and had zero offensive rebounds (just 3 total) as the Vols suffered a humbling 62-59 setback.

The Major Mystery? Where was Wingate while the game was going on? He certainly didn't show up at Beard-Eaves Coliseum.

"No field goals doesn't bother me so much,'' head coach Buzz Peterson said, noting that Wingate was 6 of 6 from the foul line with a team-high 5 assists. ''The thing that bothers me is no offensive boards. I told him I needed more out of him than zero.''
