Ely on Naismith list

Tennessee All-American Shyra Ely has been selected as one of 30 mid-season candidates for the prestigious Naismith Trophy by the Atlanta Tipoff Club's Board of Selectors. The board, which is composed of leading basketball journalists, coaches and administrators from around the country, based its criteria on player performances this season. The list was narrowed down from the preseason list of 50 candidates who were announced at the beginning of the season.

En route to helping UT to a national ranking of sixth and a 21-4 record overall, Ely stands as the team's leading scorer (13.6 ppg) and rebounder (6.6 rpg). Additionally, the Indianapolis, Ind., native has recorded a team-high five double-doubles this season. Her most impressive performance during the 2004-05 campaign came in the Lady Vols‚ most recent victory, an 81-74 decision at Arkansas, in which she totaled 30 points and 11 rebounds, coming up just one point shy of equaling her career high.

One of the greatest players to ever lace up her sneakers at Tennessee, Ely currently ranks 13th on UT's all-time scoring list (1,510) and ninth on the rebounding charts (859).

The Lady Vols‚ will conclude their regular-season home schedule when they host Mississippi State on Thursday at 7 p.m.
