Vols name six captains

Two repeat picks, a junior and a projected non-starter are among the six players the Tennessee football team has voted captains for the 2005 season.

The repeat picks are defensive back Jason Allen and defensive end Parys Haralson, who also served as captains last fall. The junior is guard Rob Smith. The projected non-starter is quarterback Rick Clausen, who spent most of the 2004 season as the No. 3 quarterback and is considered a longshot to unseat sophomores Erik Ainge and Brent Schaeffer this season, as well.

The other two captains are defensive tackle Jesse Mahelona and offensive guard Cody Douglas.

Head coach Phillip Fulmer announced the selections following Saturday's fullscale scrimmage at Neyland Stadium. He seemed quite pleased with the selections.

"I think they selected six great ones,'' Fulmer said. "The kids voted day before yesterday (Thursday). Everybody got to vote, and I think they did a great job.''

With 18 starters back from a squad that won 10 games and routed Texas A&M 38-7 in the Cotton Bowl, Tennessee seems to have the firepower on offense and the experience on defense to contend for the national title. The major area of concern is leadership due to the loss of such leaders as Kevin Burnett and Michael Munoz. That puts extra pressure on the 2005 captains.

''Them, along with our seniors and juniors, will have to do a great job taking leadership roles and developing this football team,'' Fulmer said.
