Two gridders arrested

Quarterback Brent Schaeffer and wide receiver Bret Smith were arrested late Sunday night in connection with an altercation at a campus dormitory earlier in the day.

According to a police report cited by The Knoxville News-Sentinel, the altercation occurred at 5:15 a.m. in the lobby of Clement Hall. A videotape of the incident shows a student later identified as Quantavious T. Emerson carrying a metal baseball bat as he approaches Schaeffer and a young female, presumably a UT student.

According to the report, the videotape then shows Schaeffer pick up Emerson and throw him onto the floor. Emerson was taken to UT Hospital, where he reportedly had a head wound that had to be closed with four staples.

According to the police report, several other males showed up in the video carrying baseball bats. Bret Smith does not show up on the video, so his role in the incident remains unclear at this time.

Smith was arrested at 11:47 p.m. and Schaeffer shortly thereafter. Both were subsequently released.
