Jerod Mayo denies guilt

Jerod Mayo says he was not involved in an altercation at the University Center Ballroom five weeks ago that led to police intervention.

Mayo, a first-year linebacker with the Vol football team, was served with an arrest warrant and removed from Tuesday's practice by police investigating the Ballroom scuffle.

Head coach Phillip Fulmer said he believed Mayo was a victim of ''mistaken identity'' and was not actively involved in the ugly incident.

Mayo later issued a statement through the UT sports information department denying any wrongdoing in the affair. That statement reads as follows:

"I did not hit anybody and I have no reason for being charged in this incident. My name and reputation are very important to me and I would not do anything to embarrass myself, UT or my teammates.

"I look forward to getting to the bottom of this."
