Signees attend O&W

At least four high school standouts who signed with UT last February were among the visitors at "Fan Day" prior to Saturday's Orange & White football game, and all seemed to really enjoy the attention they got from dozens of autograph-seeking Vol fans.

The four I recognized were quarterback Jonathan Crompton (Waynesville, N.C.), center Josh McNeil (Collins, Miss.), defensive end Wes Brown (Athens, Ala.) and offensive lineman Chris Scott (Lovejoy, Ga.). We won't know how well these guys can play until preseason drills begin in August but they certainly pass the "eye test." Scott, in particular, is an imposing physical specimen.

I also spotted Jimmy Clausen milling around on the field during Fan Day. Only a sophomore, the younger brother of Casey and Rick still has two years of high school to complete before he's a college-eligible prospect. Jimmy was less than 5-feet tall when I first saw him five years ago. Now he's around 6-3.

I also ran into Anthony McAllister, the talented Knoxville Austin-East linebacker who is coming to UT as an invited walk-on this fall. He seemed to be enjoying himself out on Shields-Watkins Field and looking forward to playing there the next four years. This is a quality young man with excellent grades and a reputation as a big-time hitter. I predict he'll contribute on special teams this fall. I also predict fans are going to like this guy a lot.
