Clausen unhurt by fall

At this rate, Jonathan Crompton may be Tennessee's No. 1 quarterback by August.

First, rising sophomore QB Brent Schaeffer elected to transfer following his arrest on a simple assault charge. Then rising senior Rick Clausen took a 10-foot fall off a walkway Saturday night. He was taken to a Knoxville hospital but an examination revealed no injuries beyond a few minor bumps and bruises. Head coach Phillip Fulmer told The Knoxville News-Sentinel Clausen was ''fine ... just a little sore.''

Still, Clausen's tumble -- coupled with Schaeffer's transfer -- is cause for pause. Had Clausen sustained a significant injury, the Vols' QB corps would've been reduced to rising sophomore Erik Ainge and little-used reserve Bo Hardegree.

The way things are going, Crompton might be wise to keep his arm loose ... just in case.
