CFN.com tabs UT No. 2

It's no surprise that the folks at Collegefootballnews.com list defending national champ Southern Cal No. 1 among title contenders for 2005. But the popular website's pick for No. 2 is a little more intriguing. It's the Tennessee Vols.

In a story called ''National Title Contenders: Teams going into 2005 with an honest shot at the national title,'' CFN.com makes a misguided reference to quarterback Brent Schaeffer, who recently announced his decision to transfer. Still, the piece is an interesting read that's well worth checking out.

Here's what it had to say about the Big Orange:

The Vols will be back among the elite of the elite as long as the defense can take a little overall step up in production. The offense will be a juggernaut with what many consider to be Tennessee's most talented receiving corps ever (which is obviously saying a ton for this program). RB Gerald Riggs Jr. and QBs Erik Ainge and Brent Schaeffer are ready to be big-time college football household names. The defense will lose star linebacker Kevin Burnett, but there's more than enough talent to come up with a killer D helped by the return of CB Jason Allen. Biggest offensive loss: RB Cedric Houston   Biggest defensive loss: LB Kevin Burnett

The rest of CFN.com's 11-team list is: 3-Iowa, 4-Ohio State, 5-VPI, 6-Texas, 7-Miami, 8-LSU, 9-Florida, 10-Oklahoma, 11-Arizona State.
