Pearl releases Dotson

Tennessee's basketball program has lost another of last November's signees -- this time, apparently, by mutual consent.

According to a memo sent out earlier today by the university's sports information office, Matthew Dotson has been released from the scholarship he signed with former UT head man Buzz Peterson last fall. Earlier, Pulaski forward Tyler Smith announced that he does not intend to honor the scholarship he signed with Peterson last November.

Pearl coaches a fast-paced, 94-foot brand of basketball that emphasizes transition offense and fullcourt pressure defense. Dotson, a 6-8 forward, appears to be a better fit for a halfcourt style of attack.

The UT memo reads as follows:

University of Tennessee head coach Bruce Pearl announced today that Matthew Dotson has been released from his national letter of intent to play basketball at Tennessee. A native of Centerville, Tenn., Dotson signed with the Vols in the November 2004 signing period.

"We have visited with the Dotson family over the past few weeks and have come to the mutual decision that Matthew's interests may be best served at another school. My job as coach is to put my student-athletes in the best position to be successful. I wish him the best of luck in the future."
