McDaniel case drags on

The wheels of justice grind slowly sometimes, and that's the best thing Vol defensive tackle Tony McDaniel has going for him these days.

McDaniel, arrested last Jan. 12 for allegedly smashing a fellow student's face with one punch during a pickup basketball game, was arraigned Wednesday on a felony count of aggravated assault. He returns to court Aug. 16 for a status update.

This means McDaniel's attorney, Don Bosch, has two more months to convince the complainant in the case to accept an out-of-court settlement. If this can be accomplished, there is a good chance McDaniel will be in uniform when the Vols open the 2005 season Sept. 3 against Alabama Birmingham.

If the case goes to court and McDaniel is convicted of a felony charge, however, his career as a UT student/football player appears to be ended.
