Niles nixes Tennessee

One of Tennessee basketball's top in-state recruiting targets says he is no longer seriously considering the Vols.

Pierre Niles, a 6-7, 275-pound power forward from Memphis Ridgeway, recently told Jim Masilak of the Commercial Appeal that the Big Orange has dropped off his radar.

''My top two right now are Arkansas and Memphis,'' Niles said, adding that he's also considering Arizona, Colorado and Texas.

Tennessee appeared to be his leader once upon a time but that time, apparently, has passed.

''I'm not really interested in Tennessee like I was before (former coach) Buzz (Peterson) left," said Niles, who is showcasing his talents this week in the adidas Superstar Camp at Suwanee. Ga.

Niles is being reared by Steve Saine, an uncle who successfully petitioned to become his legal guardian three years ago. Saine's influence on Niles' choice of colleges is unclear at this point.

For all of his talent on the basketball floor, Niles is a bit of an academic risk. His grade-point average is roughly 2.0 and he scored a 14 on his most recent ACT.
