Senior linebacker Kevin Simon was pleased with the effort Tennessee's defense gave in Saturday's full-scale scrimmage but not with the execution. The stop unit gave up several big plays – a 69-yard pass from Bo Hardegree to Lucas Taylor, a 65-yard bomb from Rick Clausen to Bret Smith, a 40-yard run by Arian Foster, plus completions of 26 and 25 yards from Erik Ainge to Josh Briscoe.
Simon believes the defensive lapses were due more to poor vision and communication than anything else.
"It was pretty much guys not reading, not seeing certain things … tunnel vision happened a lot," he said. "The effort was there. Guys were flying around to the football, trying to make things happen. But, from a communications standpoint, we had some busts and the offense made some plays.
The defense gets a shot at redemption in scrimmage No. 2, scheduled this Saturday night.
"I think we'll be able to sew all those loose ends up and make it better the next time," Simon said.
