UT practice report

Tennessee practiced for nearly two hours Friday at Haslam Field, working in shorts and shoulder pads toward the final few days of preseason camp. The Vols hold their annual kicking scrimmage Saturday morning before beginning game week preparations Monday.

"Saturday will be a big day for us as we make decisions in some phases of the kicking game," Fulmer said. "I've really been happy with the progress that we have made."

Tennessee returns junior place-kicker James Wilhoit, who had offseason foot surgery but has appeared in top form during preseason drills. Wilhoit was a freshman All-America two years ago and has been tabbed 2005 second-team preseason All-SEC by the league coaches.

Newcomer Britton Colquitt also has made a fall camp impact, working his way into the backup place-kicker position in addition to first team punting duties.

"That's important when you go on the road in the SEC and can take only 70 players," Fulmer said. "For those two, James and Britton, to be able to handle both positions is crucial."

Ryan West and Adam Miles have maintained their positions as deep snappers for the punting and placements, respectively, while Casey Woods appears set for holding duties, backed up by Colquitt.

The Vols host UAB next Saturday at Neyland Stadium. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m. Eastern time.
