Tennessee took the opening kickoff and went 49 yards in eight plays, setting up a 46-yard field goal by James Wilhoit that produced a 3-0 lead. The big plays on the drive were a 13-yard run by Gerald Riggs and a 13-yard pass from Erik Ainge to C.J. Fayton.

A big hit by Jason Mitchell caused a Dan Burks fumble on the first play of UAB's initial possession. Vol linebacker Omar Gaither recovered at the Blazer 33-yard line. After four Riggs runs and two offsides penalties against UAB, Ainge hit Chris Hannon with a three-yard touchdown pass in the left corner of the end zone for a 10-0 lead.

KEY PLAY

Mitchell's fumble-causing hit on Burks. The Vols already had a 3-0 lead and some momentum, but that play really knocked the breath out of the visitors.

KEY PLAYER

Riggs. The senior tailback made several nifty moves and rushed 11 times for 62 yards in the quarter.

Tennessee moved into UAB territory but Wilhoit was wide left on a 47-yard field goal attempt. After a three-and-out by UAB, an Ainge overthrow was intercepted by Brandon Register at the Blazer 42-yard line.

A 17-yard pass from Darrell Hackney to Jhun Cook fueled a short drive that ended with a 37-yard field goal by Parker Mullins, closing the gap to 10-3.

Backup QB Rick Clausen made the most of his second series, marching the Vols 80 yards in 10 plays. The final play was a 12-yard pass to C.J. Fayton just 44 seconds shy of halftime, boosting the lead to 17-3.

KEY PLAY

On third-and-10 at the UAB 43-yard line Clausen found Jayson Swain on a crossing route that produced a 31-yard gain. UT scored on the very next play.

UAB drove to a first-and-goal at the Vol 3-yard line but tackle Justin Harrell intercepted a Hackney toss over the middle and lumbered 29 yards to snuff the threat.

Tennessee appeared on the verge of opening up some breathing room, driving to the UAB 14-yard line early in the final period. A Clausen pass bounced off the hands of Cory Anderson, however, and was intercepted by UAB's Kevin Sanders.

Spurred by the big break, the Blazers drove 86 yards in 11 plays and narrowed the gap to 17-10. The score came when Reggie Lindsey broke clean on a crossing route and gathered in a 27-yard TD strike from Hackney.

Another Ainge overthrow produced another Register interception, this time at the Vol 45-yard line. UAB eventually moved to a fourth-and-goal at the UT 7-yard line. Freshman safety Demetrice Morley tipped a pass intended for Lance Rhodes, however, to end the scoring threat.

With UT facing third and six at the Vol 16-yard line, UAB cornerback Carlos Hendricks crumpled to the ground with a knee injury. Clausen alertly threw to the uncovered Fayton, who raced downfield to complete a 53-yard play. A 15-yard run by Riggs and two kneel plays ran out the clock.

KEY PLAY

Morley's defensive play on the fourth-down pass. The talented freshman had great position and showed quick hands. Obviously, a TD there would've tied the score and possibly forced the game into overtime.

KEY PLAYER

Hackney. Heroic in defeat, he completed 11 of 14 fourth-quarter passes for 123 yards and a TD.

KEY STAT

After converting on just 1 of 7 third-down tries in the first three periods, UAB converted on 4 of 5 in the final stanza.
