Tennessee appeared on the verge of opening up some breathing room, driving to the UAB 14-yard line early in the final period. A Clausen pass bounced off the hands of Cory Anderson, however, and was intercepted by UAB's Kevin Sanders.
Spurred by the big break, the Blazers drove 86 yards in 11 plays and narrowed the gap to 17-10. The score came when Reggie Lindsey broke clean on a crossing route and gathered in a 27-yard TD strike from Hackney.
Another Ainge overthrow produced another Register interception, this time at the Vol 45-yard line. UAB eventually moved to a fourth-and-goal at the UT 7-yard line. Freshman safety Demetrice Morley tipped a pass intended for Lance Rhodes, however, to end the scoring threat.
With UT facing third and six at the Vol 16-yard line, UAB cornerback Carlos Hendricks crumpled to the ground with a knee injury. Clausen alertly threw to the uncovered Fayton, who raced downfield to complete a 53-yard play. A 15-yard run by Riggs and two kneel plays ran out the clock.
