Fulmer after open dates

The fact Tennessee's football team has an open date before facing Florida Sept. 17 sounds like a real plus. Upon closer inspection, however, it sounds like a good news/bad news joke.

The good news: Phil Fulmer's record following open dates is an impressive 19-6.

The bad news: Five of his six losses came at the hands of Florida.

Tennessee suffered two post-open date humiliations in 2002 – losing 30-13 to Florida and 31-14 to Alabama. Worse, both games were played at Neyland Stadium. Since then, however, Fulmer has gone 4-0 following open dates.

For those seeking a positive omen, consider this: The last time Tennessee played Florida in The Swamp after an open date, the Vols prevailed 24-10.
