Brooks, a 6-4, 235-pound linebacker from Jackson, has had an ongoing feud with Patterson for more than a year. On Monday the bickering escalated into a physical altercation that also involved Hendrix.
That was the final straw for Hendrix, a 6-foot-8, 225-pound Clemson transfer already serving a suspension for marijuana possession and driving without a license. He averaged less than 3 points and 3 rebounds per game as a junior reserve last winter.
Patterson, a 6-6, 200-pound UCLA transfer who started 22 games as a junior last season, could rejoin the team if he can meet certain conditions between now and the beginning of basketball season.
In a statement released by the UT sports information department, head basketball coach Bruce Pearl said:
"I am disappointed in Jemere and Andre. We set standards that we expect our student-athletes to adhere to, both on and off the court. We will not tolerate anything less."
Brooks has been involved in at least three previous incidents. He missed UT's first three football games of 2005 on disciplinary suspension for his involvement in a fight last winter. A former prep All-American, Brooks never started a game at UT and recorded just 11 tackles in his first two seasons of action. He was ticketed for a redshirt year at the time of his dismissal.
Football coach Phillip Fulmer released a statement through the sports information office, as well. It said:
"We have made every effort to help Daniel work through some issues. Unfortunately, we have decided it's in everyone's best interest to go our separate ways."
