Dawgs back on top

After beating Tennessee in Knoxville and Vanderbilt in Nashville on successive weekends, the Georgia Bulldogs probably qualify as champions of the Volunteer State. They also qualify as the top team in the latest Rockytop.com SEC rankings.

Georgia's 34-17 spanking of Vandy, coupled with Alabama's close call at Ole Miss, has moved Mark Richt's Bulldogs slightly ahead of Mike Shula's Crimson Tide. Reeling from the loss of big-play specialist Tyrone Prothro, Bama needed a field goal on the game's final play to nip the Rebels 10-7.

That said, here's a complete look at this week's ratings, based on the usual 1-10 scale:

1. Georgia (9.0): D.J. Shockley completed 15 of 30 passes for 298 yards and three TDs as the Dawgs (6-0 overall, 4-0 SEC) whipped Vandy 34-17, padding Richt's road record to a mind-boggling 18-2.

2. Alabama (8.5): Brodie Croyle passed for 234 yards and Kenneth Darby rushed for 100 but Prothro clearly was missed as the Tide (6-0, 4-0) struggled to put away the offensively challenged Rebels 10-7.

3. Auburn (8.5): Kenny Irons came off the bench to rush 33 times for 182 yards as the Tigers (5-1, 3-0) tamed Arkansas 34-17. Brandon Cox threw three TD passes as Auburn won its fifth game in a row.

4. LSU (8.0): Joseph Addai ran for 152 yards as the Tigers (4-1, 3-1) overcame five turnovers and 12 penalties to beat Florida 21-17. JaMarcus Russell was 14 of 23 for 238 yards but made some dumb throws.

5. Florida (7.5): Slowed by a shoulder injury, quarterback Chris Leak completed just 10 of 29 passes for 98 yards as the Gators (5-2, 3-2) fell at LSU.

6. Tennessee (7.0): The Vols were idle.

7. South Carolina (6.0): The Gamecocks were idle.

8. Arkansas (5.0): The Razorbacks (2-4, 0-3) led Auburn 10-6 at halftime before wilting in a 34-17 loss. They're missing Matt   Jones more than many experts expected.

9. Vanderbilt (5.0): The Commodores (4-3, 2-2) have lost three games in a row, despite the heroic efforts of quarterback Jay Cutler.

10. Ole Miss (5.0): Michael Spurlock has passed for more than 200 yards three games in a row, yet the Rebels (2-4, 0-3) average an SEC-worst 13 points per game. Spurlock was 19 of 32 for 210 yards in the loss to Bama.

11. Mississippi State (4.0): The Bulldogs were idle.

Kentucky (3.0): The Wildcats were idle.
