California TE Visits the Vols

Na Derris "Duke" Ward is one of the most highly sought after tight ends in the country and the northern California star took a visit east to the University of Tennessee this past weekend. He talks to Scout.com about the trip.

"Oh I liked it a lot. I met a few players but when you lose they were expectedly kind of down and they weren't really in the mood to have a lot of fun, but the ones I did meet were cool," Na Derris Ward said.

What stood out the most about the visit?

"I liked how down to earth the people were. That's the main thing I look for in the people. I was real pleased with the guys we met and I've been knowing Kevin Simon for a minute so it was good to see him."

Duke was impressed by Coach Fulmer.

"Oh man Coach Fulmer is a wonderful guy. He's real calm. Most head coaches you see are all wild but that wasn't him. He was real calm and collected. He said I would come in at the 2 spot and then potentially the 1 spot because some guys were playing out of position."

The atmosphere in Knoxville came some times be overwhelming for a recruit and it was obvious that Ward was in awe of it as well.

"That crowd was crazy. We went down the Vol Walk and people were yelling and grabbing at me. It was really a totally different level from the LSU game I went to."

He also saw an opportunity for playing time in Tennessee.

"It was obvious they needed a tight end in their offense and I think I would fit in."

Georgia has been the favorite from the outset but it appears their lead is slimming somewhat.

"Georgia has just stayed strong with me and I feel comfortable there. They lead but it's slight. It's not as much as it was. Right now I'm pretty much open and I'm going to evaluate all my options."

The Dawgs will get the next chance to impress Duke when he comes to Athens for their game against Kentucky in two weeks time. Stay tuned to Scout.com for the latest of Na Derris Ward.
