Year of the Monkey?

Maybe the Chinese should officially declare this "The Year of the Monkey" in college sports.

Roy Williams had been ridiculed for years because his talent-rich Kansas Jayhawk basketball teams never won a national title.

Mack Brown was similarly chided because his Texas football teams routinely failed to "win the big one" despite world-class personnel.

Each managed to get the monkey off his back in the past 11 months, however.

Williams did so last March by guiding the North Carolina Tar Heels to the NCAA championship. Brown followed suit Wednesday night by beating Southern Cal in the Rose Bowl for the Longhorns' first national title in 35 years.

Personally, I was glad to see Texas beat USC. For one thing, I was tired of hearing about the Trojan "dynasty." For another, I predicted Texas to win in the bowl picks and needed a victory to salvage a tie with Jeffery Stewart.

By the way, Jeffery and I went 10-12 each in our bowl predictions. Now you know why we make a living covering football games instead of handicapping them.
