Strength of schedule

In case you hadn't noticed, Tennessee's basketball record hasn't built its 10-1 record against an assortment of stiffs. The Vols have been beating some pretty good teams. Confirmation can be found at

The folks at utilize a strength-of-schedule formula that ranks Tennessee's slate No. 51 in all of NCAA basketball through games of Jan. 9.

In addition to perennial NCAA powers Texas and Oklahoma State, the Vols have faced the top two teams in the Ohio Valley Conference (Murray State and Eastern Kentucky), plus the defending Sun Belt Conference champ (Louisiana-Lafayette) and the defending Southwest Athletic Conference champ (Alabama A&M).

Not surprisingly, Kentucky has faced the toughest schedule to date among Southeastern Conference teams. The Wildcats' slate is ranked No. 19 nationally. Auburn (23rd), LSU (28th) and Alabama (43rd) also rank in the top 50.

Interestingly enough, Ole Miss' 11-3 start can be traced in large part to the fact the Rebels have faced a collection of paper tigers. Ole Miss' schedule is ranked No. 254 nationally. Florida, the SEC's only unbeaten team at 14-0, also has benefited from a soft schedule. The Gator slate is ranked No. 131 nationally.
