Vols Add Louisiana Lineman

In something of a surprise move, Tennessee dropped down a deep and diverse list of defensive linemen to get a commitment from Jared Shaw of Lafayette, La.

With bigger names on the board the Vols must have really liked what the 6-foot-5, 330-pound Shaw had to offer. He obviously has size and demonstrated good strength with 24 reps in the bench press of 185 pounds at the Nike Camp in Oxford, Miss., last spring.

Jared Shaw is also a good student who is fully qualified with a 3.9 GPA. He runs in the 5.25 range and recorded 98 tackles with 7.5 sacks as a junior at Lafayette Northside High School. He reportedly had offers from UCLA and Tennessee among others.

Given Shaw's size and speed he seems a better fit for Tennessee's offensive line. However he has played primarily on the D-line and expressed reluctance to switch sides in an interview last spring with Sonny Shipp of TigerRag.com.

"Not really because I like defense," he said. "I think I'm better suited for defense because I can move well for my size. I have good technique and I can get after it."

Shaw is Tennessee's 19th commitment in the Class of 2006. He is not currently ranked by Scout.com but is rated a two-star prospect. More to follow.
