Scrimmage highlights

Spectators attending Saturday's first Tennessee football scrimmage of the spring saw almost as many big plays as they did in 11 games last fall. Whether that's a credit to new offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe or an indictment of a defense missing six members of last fall's starting front seven remains to be seen.

Regardless, here are the highlights:

Erik Ainge hit Bret Smith for a 22-yard gain on the fourth play of the day.

James Wilhoit nailed a 46-yard field goal with plenty of room to spare.

Redshirt freshman safety Antonio Wardlow made a big hit on tailback Jakouri Williams at the end of a four-yard gain.

Bo Hardegree made a dandy throw to Bill Grimes for a 15-yard gain.

Converted safety Adam Myers-White made a spectacular diving deflection of a Hardegree pass.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Jonathan Crompton hit Austin Rogers for a 14-yard gain.

Tailback Ricardo Kemp, a converted defensive back, showed a good burst on a nine-yard run.

Fullback Cory Anderson burst through a gaping hole at right tackle and rambled 64 yards to the 4-yard line. He carried the next three times in a one-back set, bulling into the end zone on the third try.

Middle linebacker Marvin Mitchell roared up the middle on a blitz to sack Ainge for a six-yard loss.

Ainge and Josh Briscoe hooked up on a nifty 17-yard completion.

Defensive end Walter Fisher, showing great speed off the edge, made consecutive minus-yard stops – dropping Jakouri Williams for minus-1, then sacking Hardegree for minus-5.

Adam Myers-White showed tremendous range in coming from the back-side to run down Jakouri Williams after a three-yard gain.

Hardegree found Grimes for 10 yards.

Kemp made a nice move that turned a swing pass into an eight-yard gain.

Wilhoit nailed a 43-yard field goal.

Linebacker Ellix Wilson shot through a gap to throw the 265-pound Anderson for a two-yard loss.

Marvin Mitchell flashed his quickness again in sacking Ainge for a four-yard loss.

Linebacker Ryan Karl shot through an opening to sack Ainge for a five-yard loss.

Ainge fired over the middle to Robert Meachem, who dragged a couple of defenders the last third of an 18-yard gain.

Cory Anderson lumbered through a gaping hole at left tackle on a one-yard touchdown run.

Defensive end Robert Ayers batted a pass, which wound up being thrown AND caught by Jonathan Crompton.

Crompton, who exhibited excellent feet, scored untouched on a seven-yard quarterback draw.

One play after losing four yards on a fumbled snap, Crompton zipped a 19-yard touchdown strike to Lucas Taylor, who made a nice leaping catch.

Wilhoit hit a 28-yard field goal.

Ainge threw what should've been an 11-yard TD strike to Bret Smith on a quick out but Smith couldn't find the handle.

Lucas Taylor showed a quick burst on an eight-yard end-around to the 1-yard line, and Jakouri Williams scored on the next play.

Adam Myers-White sacked Hardegree for a four-yard loss.

In a brief goal-line drill, Hardegree made a perfect throw to a well-covered Slick Shelley for seven-yard touchdown in the back-left corner of the South end zone. Crompton completed a nine-yard TD toss to Casey Woods, who made a fine leaping catch. On the very next play Crompton hit Woods in the numbers with another nine-yard pass but Woods dropped this one in the back of the end zone. Crompton then threw what should've been his third TD pass in a row, tossing a swing pass the shifty Taylor turned into a nine-yard score.

Marvin Mitchell made the hit of the day, blasting Meachem on a short pass over the middle. To his credit, Meachem held onto the ball.

Walter Fisher nearly intercepted an Ainge screen pass intended for fullback David Holbert.

David Yancey exploded through a huge hole at right tackle, juked safety Jonathan Hefney off his feet with a nifty cutback and sped 55 yards for a touchdown that proved to be the most spectacular play of the day.

Defensive end Wes Brown made a big hit on Austin Rogers that forced a fumble.

Ainge lobbed a screen pass to Yancey, who picked his way through traffic for a 17-yard gain.

Ainge showed great touch on a 44-yard strike to Meachem on a post route.

Ainge, clearly throwing with better velocity, found Briscoe for 17 yards with a laser-like throw.

Ainge, rolling to his right, made an impressive throw back to his left, hitting Meachem in the back of the end zone for a two-yard touchdown.

Hardegree and Jakouri Williams connected on an 11-yard screen pass.

Hardegree hit Slick Shelley with a strike for 11 yards.

Redshirt freshman defensive tackle Dan Williams sacked Hardegree for a five-yard loss.
