Vols sign as free agents

Seven of the Tennessee football players who weren't selected in last weekend's NFL Draft didn't waste much time in locking up free-agent contracts.

Guard Rob Smith, who elected to bypass his senior year, has signed with the Cleveland Browns. He'll compete for playing time at guard with ex-Vol Cosey Coleman. Former UT linebacker Eric Westmoreland also plays for the Browns.

Guard Cody Douglas signed with the Tennessee Titans, joining Vol teammate Jesse Mahelona, the club's fifth-round pick. Ex-Vols Travis Henry, Troy Fleming and Albert Haynesworth already toil for the Titans.

Running back Gerald Riggs Jr. passed on the Atlanta Falcons (his dad's old team) and signed with the Miami Dolphins, where he'll rejoin UT teammate Jason Allen, Miami's first-round pick. Former Vol linebacker Eddie Moore also is a member of the Dolphins.

Offensive tackle Albert Toeaina signed with the Carolina Panthers. Defensive end Jason Hall hooked up with the Buffalo Bills. Defensive tackle Tony McDaniel signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he'll compete for playing time behind ex-Vol John Henderson.

Wide receiver Chris Hannon will get a look from the Kansas City Chiefs, who already have ex-Vol Julian Battle.

There is no word yet on the NFL futures of ex-Vol linebacker Jason Mitchell and former UT receiver C.J. Fayton.
