Oppenheimer visits UT

Two weeks have passed since Scott Edgar left the Tennessee basketball staff to take the top job at Southeast Missouri State. In that time Vol head man Bruce Pearl has narrowed his list of potential replacements to … uh, five.

Josh Oppenheimer is visiting the campus for a formal interview today. He's an assistant at Kent State who previously coached at DePaul, Delaware and Duquesne.

Former Ole Miss head man Rod Barnes had his official interview on Wednesday and former Iowa State assistant Damon Archibald interviewed last week.

Two of the leading candidates have not yet visited the UT campus for interviews. They are Bob Sundvold, head coach and general manager of the ABA's Kansas City Knights, and Tim Carter, former head coach at Texas-San Antonio.

Tennessee recently signed Detroit guard Ramar Smith to a scholarship, giving the Vols five incoming recruits for 2006-07. Because UT is through recruiting for the coming season, Pearl says there is no rush to fill the staff vacancy. That's why the head man is being especially meticulous throughout the search process.
