Some people have been writing that Tennessee football coach Phillip Fulmer is "on the hot seat" to some extent after posting a disappointing 5-6 record last fall. Several of those stories have been republished or excerpted on this site.
But Fulmer has his supporters, too. One of them is Matt Hayes of the Sporting News. In the College Football Insider section of the May 26 issue, Hayes has a segment called "Cool your jets – it's not that hot in here." Basically, Hayes writes that Michigan
's Lloyd Carr, Maryland
's Ralph Friedgen
's Joe Tiller and Fulmer are on solid ground, despite speculation to the contrary.
Here's what Hayes has to say about Fulmer:
"Phil Fulmer, Tennessee. The issue: UT hasn't done squat since winning the national title in 1998. (OK, three SEC East titles have to mean something, right?) But you don't fire a coach who has an 82-24 career record in SEC games."
