Gatlin tabbed SEC'S best

UT's Justin Gatlin — Who else? — has been named SEC Male Outdoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year in a vote of league coaches.

Gatlin, who claimed the same award for the Indoor season a few months ago, recently won the 100- and 200-meter sprint titles at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. He took home the same titles outdoors in 2001, making Gatlin the first man to repeat in both events outdoors since Abilene Christian's Bobby Morrow in 1956-57.

Gatlin went undefeated in the sprints throughout the Indoor and Outdoor seasons, and now has won six consecutive NCAA sprint titles, a feat unprecedented in school history. He has at least tied for high scorer honors in the last three NCAA meets and last two SEC meets he has entered.

In an ironic twist, Doug Brown (formerly of UT) was tabbed SEC Men's Outdoor Track and Field Coach of the Year mere weeks after being fired by Florida athletics director Jeremy Foley.

Meanwhile, the SEC has tabbed LSU track star Walter Davis and Alabama gymnast Andree' Pickens its Male and Female Athlete of the Year, respectively. The awards were voted by the 12 SEC athletics directors.
