Vols Rank No. 5 in Composite Poll

The Tennessee Vols rank No. 5 in a composite preseason college football poll compiled by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution based on a sampling of six major preseason publications.

The publications used were The Sporting News, Street & Smith's, Football Action, Athlon Sports, Lindy's and Phil Steele.

The Texas Longhorns are rated No. 1 in the survey but that isn't exactly cause for celebration. Only one of the past 10 teams ranked No. 1 in the composite poll won a national championship ... Florida State in 1999.

This year's survey shows Texas as the national favorite, although the Longhorns were tabbed No. 1 by just one of the six polls cited. Oklahoma finished second, one point behind Texas, despite being tabbed No. 1 in three of the six publications. One publication chose Florida State No. 1, while another chose Tennessee.

Three SEC East schools made the composite top 10. In addition to UT at No. 5, Florida checks in at No. 6 and Georgia at No. 10.
