Eligibility update

With just two weeks remaining before the start of preseason football drills, the latest academic status report on Tennessee's incoming signees shapes up this way: One's in, two are out and two are still on hold.

The "in" is offensive lineman Ramone Johnson of Chicago. According to The Tennessean, the 6-4, 305-pounder recently got word that he has been approved for admission to UT by the NCAA Clearinghouse. Reportedly, the delay in approving him stemmed from the fact Morgan Park High's school year spilled into June. Rated a four-star prospect by Scout, Johnson is scheduled to begin the second session of summer school today.

While Johnson is "in," receiver/defensive back Brent Vinson (Hampton, Va.) and running back Dustin Lindsey (Alcoa) are out. Neither qualified academically to enroll at UT this fall. Vinson will attend prep school at Hargrave Military Academy in Virginia; Lindsay will go the juco route by attending Coffeyville Community College in Kansas.

Vinson, a 6-2, 180-pounder, is a cousin of former Virginia Tech standout and recent NFL draftee Jimmy Williams. As a senior at Phoebus High last fall Vinson recorded 1,200 receiving yards and five interceptions, returning two of the Oskies for touchdowns

Lindsey, a 6-1, 225-pound power back, ranked No. 99 on Scout's Hot 100 for the South last fall. He rushed for 1,221 yards and averaged a whopping 10.1 yards per carry.

The two signees still "on hold" are receiver/defensive back Stephaun Raines of Dalton, Ga., and safety Justin Garrett of Pasadena City College. Raines (6-1, 175) reportedly remains under scrutiny because of one questionable class he took as a high school senior. Garrett (6-2, 195) needs to pass two courses this summer to qualify for immediate eligibility at UT.

Raines compiled more than 1,700 all-purpose yards as a senior. Clocked at a sizzling 10.6 seconds in the 100 meters, he registered 704 receiving yards and 947 rushing yards last fall.

Rated a four-star prospect by Scout, Garrett registered 88 tackles in 2004 and a team-high 83 stops in '05. He's originally from Baton Rouge, La.
