Scrimmage highlights

Tennessee's offense looked to be in midseason form in Saturday's first full-scale scrimmage of the preseason. Unfortunately, it looked to be in midseason 2005 form. In other words, it made an awful lot of mistakes.

That said, here are the highlights and lowlights:

- No. 1 quarterback Erik Ainge had to take a timeout before the very first scrimmage play. That was not a good omen.

- Tailback Arian Foster made a nice run up the middle, weaving his way through traffic for a six-yard gain.

- Cornerback Inquoris Johnson leaped high to break up an Ainge pass intended for Lucas Taylor. On the very next play cornerback Jonathan Wade made a nifty breakup of a pass intended for Bret Smith.

- On a fake field goal, holder Casey Woods (a former prep quarterback) threw a short pass to kicker James Wilhoit, who rambled 20 yards to complete a 26-yard touchdown play.

- No. 2 quarterback Jonathan Crompton fumbled the first snap he took.

- On a third-and-two, David Yancey was hit in the backfield but somehow burrowed his way forward to pick up the first down.

- Crompton threw a bullet to Lucas Taylor for a nine-yard gain on third-and-four.

- Linebacker Jerod Mayo covered a bunch of ground, then made a diving tackle to stop wideout Robert Meachem for no gain on a pass play.

- Linebacker Ryan Karl made a nice pass breakup to thwart a short toss from Ainge to Swain.

- Tight end Brad Cottam broke two tackles and turned a five-yard pass from Ainge into a 17-yard gain. Cottam dropped at least two catchable passes later in the scrimmage, however.

- Defensive tackles Matt McGlothlin and Justin Harrell combined to sack Ainge for a seven-yard loss.

- Ainge hit Jayson Swain with a 12-yard strike on an out route.

- Mayo stormed through on a blitz to sack Ainge for a five-yard loss. Mayo was judged offsides but three of us media types agreed the penalty should not have been called.

- Bolden sacked Ainge for a five-yard loss.

- Tailback David Yancey popped outside and showed a surprising burst of speed on a 28-yard run.

- Crompton hit Lucas Taylor with a perfectly thrown 27-yard touchdown strike.

- Crompton threw a beautiful 30-yard pass to Josh Briscoe that just slipped off his fingertips.

- Demonte Bolden sacked Crompton on back-to-back plays.

- No. 3 quarterback Bo Hardegree found freshman receiver Quintin Hancock for a 45-yard touchdown hookup against third-team defenders.

- On a first-and-10 at his own 4-yard line, Ainge retreated into his end zone and threw an ill-advised pass that should've been intercepted at the 15-yard line. Jonathan Wade dropped it, however.

- Arian Foster exploded through a small opening on a nifty 11-yard run.

- Ja'Kouri Williams showed a nice burst of speed on a seven-yard run.

- Matt McGlothlin recorded his second sack of the day, nailing Ainge for a 10-yard loss.

- Ainge completed a 15-yard out route to Robert Meachem.

- Cornerback Jonathan Wade intercepted when Ainge's receiver fell.

- Defensive tackle Dan Williams threw Coker for a four-yard loss and sacked Hardegree for a four-yard loss within a stretch of four plays.

- Ja'Kouri Williams raced 18 yards on a fake reverse.

- Hardegree threw his second TD pass of the afternoon, hitting a well-covered Josh Briscoe with a 20-yard strike.

- Ainge hit Swain with a 12-yard pass on third-and-11.

- Arian Foster rambled 15 yards but fumbled at the end of the run.

- Yancey gained 10 yards on the very next play but also fumbled.

- Crompton overthrew Austin Rogers maybe an inch on a 50-yard bomb.

- Ainge scrambled for a 10-yard gain, then threaded the needle on a 22-yard pass to Swain.

- Ainge threw a ball up for grabs that Jonathan Hefney intercepted in the end zone.

- LaMarcus Coker showed nice speed on a 10-yard run.

- Crompton rolled out of trouble, then hit Briscoe with a 16-yard strike.

- Linebacker Rico McCoy batted a Crompton pass.

- Crompton completed back-to-back passes to Austin Rogers, gaining 10 and 15 yards.

- Coker took a flat pass from Crompton and showed nice acceleration as he raced 10 yards into the end one.

- Demetrice Morley flew in from the outside rush position to block a James Wilhoit field goal.
