Another frosh dismissed

Growing up in Morristown, just 40 miles from the University of Tennessee campus, he signed a football scholarship last February and was thrilled with the opportunity to be a Vol. Suddenly, that opportunity is gone.

Blake Garretson has been dismissed from the team for a "violation of team rules." Head coach Phillip Fulmer announced the dismissal on Monday.

Contacted by phone this evening, Garretson had no comment on the disciplinary action taken by the Vols.

"They told me not to say anything," he said somberly.

Garretson was an all-state defensive tackle at Morristown East High School last fall. The 6-3, 277-pounder registered more than 100 tackles in 2005. Considered a "sleeper" when he signed with UT in February, he seemed eager to prove himself worthy of a Vol scholarship. Now he won't get that chance.

Garretson is the fifth member of the 2006 signing class to drop off the roster. Receiver Brent Vinson (Hampton, Va.), tailback Dustin Lindsey (Alcoa) and safety Justin Garrett (Pasadena City College) did not qualify for admission.

Tight end Lee Smith (Powell) had his scholarship pulled three weeks ago following a series of mishaps that culminated with a DUI arrest. Like Garretson, he grew up wanting to be a Vol.

Tennessee could lose two more '06 signees. Defensive end Gerald Williams (Lauderdale Lakes, Fla.) and wide receiver Stephaun Raines (Dalton, Ga.) have not yet been approved for enrollment by the NCAA Clearinghouse.
