Captains for Cal game

Head coach Phillip Fulmer announced Friday that Tennessee's football program will have five game captains take the field for the season-opening coin toss when the Volunteers host California next Saturday.

Fulmer and his staff named defensive tackles Justin Harrell and Turk McBride, offensive tackle Arron Sears, wide receiver Jayson Swain and placekicker James Wilhoit for the Sept. 2 duties.

"They have been outstanding leaders for us and I'm looking forward to watching them walk out there to represent our team," Fulmer said. "They really are quality young men."

Fulmer said Thursday he may name permanent captains at a later date, but for the early season games plans to stick with a game-captain arrangement.

The Vols practiced in shorts and shoulder pads for just less than two hours inside the Neyland-Thompson Sports Center, working indoors to dodge the sun's rays for one day.

"We had a good practice with good energy,"Fulmer said. "e cut it back just a little bit and came inside for a change of pace to start getting our legs back."

Tennessee holds its annual kicking scrimmage and special teams dress rehearsal Saturday at Haslam Field. The Vols are off Sunday and begin California game week preparations Monday.
