HOT DOG REPORT
Knoxville
They changed the hot dogs in Knoxville. They were still good but I had a bad taste from last season and I wanted one of my dogs. Maybe the changeup was a good thing. Works for me.

Cal won the toss and opted to put their vaunted offense on the field, assuming perhaps, that they could deal the first blow and stun the underdog Vols into submission. However, the young Vol defense would have none of that. Three new starters at LB, Jerod Mayo, Ryan Karl and Marvin Mitchell led the Vols in tackles and set the tone for a long night in the Tennessee Valley for the visiting Bears.

The Vols got the ball to start the 2nd half and wasted little time increasing their lead. In just 6 offensive plays, Tennessee advanced their lead to 35-0 over the Golden Bears.

During the 4th quarter the Vols got good looks at Jonathan Crompton and LaMarcus Coker for added depth at the QB and RB positions respectively.

Meach was phenominal. He YACed it up all night. His contribution of 182 yards and 2 TD, sparked the offensive flame, which burnt the #9 Cal Bears.

Mayo led the team with 3 sacks taking Cal back 20 yards. He added 4 more stops and led a new LB corps through an amazing debut.

OFFSIDES - A VIEW FROM THE OTHER SIDE
Obviously, most Cal fans thought that it would not be much of a contest - and they were not wrong. It just didn't go the way they expected.

Cal's players didn't leave it on the field like the homestanding Vols. Perhaps they, like most of America, thought this game was in the bag. Articles of evidence: This observer saw Heisman hopeful, Marshawn Lynch exclaim he was number one by hand gesturing with both hands the less than standard middle finger version. Several other Cal receivers were seen in warm ups scoring mock TDs in GridOrange territory, then going over to the wall in the end zone, shaking the ball as if it were a paint can and then pretending to spray graffiti over the Tennessee banner.

OVERTIME - POSTGAME REACTION
Nobody on either side of this gridiron war thought this would be the outcome. Sure, Vol fans dreamed about such a game but it hardly seemed possible, especially after last season. Vol fans were humbled last season. The victory over a top 10 opponent, the first since the 2000 season, enables the Vols to get at least some of their swagger back.
