Emily Redberg leads Lady Vols to 2-0 win

The first career two-goal game from junior forward Emily Redberg led the 10th-ranked Lady Vol soccer team to a 2-0 victory over UNC-Greensboro on the first day of the 2006 First Tennessee Lady Vol Classic at the Regal Soccer Stadium.

Redberg of Brooklyn Park, Minn., got her first goal of 2006 in the 48th minute by slipping behind the Spartan defense on sophomore Sarah Van Sickle's chip and finishing the shot across goal past UNCG netminder Katherine Ryan.

Redberg followed that with another tap in from inside the six-yard box in the 89th minute, knocking in the ball after senior Kristen Doukakis flicked the ball off the direct kick from senior Jenny Jeffers. The two-goal outing is the 22nd in Tennessee soccer history.

Tennessee (2-1-1) came out on the attack in the second half, out-shooting UNC-Greensboro, 16-4, in the period. UT had other good opportunities in the second half, as Doukakis got free behind Ryan on the right side in the 73rd minute, but her shot went off the right post. Nine minutes later, senior All-American Ali Christoph took a shot from just outside the penalty box that Ryan dove to stop. Freshman Sarah Jackyra tried to put in the rebound, but Ryan corralled the ball off Jackyra's foot.

The Lady Vols had their chances in the first half, like in the 19th minute when Redberg's header off an Erica Griffin cross went right. In the 26th, sophomore forward Kylee Rossi had her shot blocked inside the penalty box. Griffin controlled the rebound and fired, but her try missed high. Four minutes later, Christoph had an opportunity from 13 yards out that went over the crossbar.

Overall, Tennessee out-shot UNC Greensboro, 26-8, and the Big Orange took seven corner kicks, compared to just two by the Spartans. UT sophomore goalkeeper Jaimel Johnson made six saves for her second consecutive shutout. The loss dropped UNC Greensboro to 0-5 on the year.

In the first match of the tournament, Middle Tennessee (5-0) continued its winning ways, taking a 2-0 win over Mercer (0-5). The Blue Raiders got a pair of goals from sophomore Kala Morgan in the first seven minutes to put the Bears away early. MTSU got its first shutout of the season, while Mercer was out-shot, 25-2, in the contest.

The 2006 First Tennessee Lady Vol Classic concludes on Sunday as Mercer and UNC Greensboro go head-to-head at 12:30 p.m., followed by Tennessee and Middle Tennessee at 3 p.m. at the Regal Soccer Stadium.
