Too bad they changed the hot dogs. These just aren't as good as in year's past.

The Falcons set the tempo from the opening kickoff. The Vols won the toss and deferred to the second half. A decision which almost proved flawed. Air Force took the ball and forced a 10-play, 5 minute and 28 second drive down the throat of the Vols defense.

The Vols answered with a field goal. Air Force returned the favor and took a 10-3 advantage. In this arm wrestling match, the Vols knotted up the score at 10 all but tacked on a buffer score, giving them a 17-10 halftime advantage.

The Vols opened the 3rd quarter with an 11-play, 99 yard touchdown drive. After surrendering a TD to the Falcons, the Vols followed with a 12-play, 73 yard touchdown score of their own.

Tennessee was poised to cover the spread and extend their lead to 21 when disaster struck. A delay of game, followed by a false start and then an interception led to a heroic comeback by the Falcons - a comeback that fell 2.5 yards and 1 point short. The Vols held on to win 31-30.

Jonathan Hefney led all Vol defenders with 17 total tackles including 8 solo stops.

OFFSIDES - A VIEW FROM THE OTHER SIDE
Air Force knew they could play the role of spoiler and were confident from the onset. They intended to not be intimidated by the large and noisy crowd.

Air Force executed a comeback strategy with military precision. It very nearly worked. After converting an interception into a touchdown drive, the Falcons pulled off a succesful on-side kick. The Vols were unable to stop the determined cadets who quickly converted another TD to bring them to within a single point of the homestanding Vols at 30-31. In a gutsy call, the Falcons played for a win instead of a tie - falling short on a two point conversion. However, if not for an off-sides call, the Falcons very nearly pulled off the unthinkable - a second successful on-side kick. Tennesee recovered the re-kick and were thankful to run out the clock and preserve a victory.

OVERTIME - POSTGAME REACTION
Humbling shock and relief. That describes what most Vol fans felt after this contest that turned out to be much more than most expected - at least the Vol fans. The Falcon faithful came into the foothills expecting to render an upset and almost pulled it off.
