Lady Vols down Stanford, 1-0

STANFORD, Calif. – Senior All-American Ali Christoph drove UT's only shot on goal into the net, handing the ninth-ranked Tennessee soccer team a 1-0 win over No. 29 Stanford on the opening evening of the 2006 Stanford Nike Invitational at Maloney Field.

The score came in the 24th minute, as Christoph took the pass from sophomore Kylee Rossi and pushed the shot past Stanford goalkeeper Alex Gamble. For Christoph, it was her second goal and second game-winner of the year, following her penalty kick score that dropped then-No. 6 Virginia two weeks ago.

Tennessee (4-1-1) won the defensive battle that marked the match, as the Lady Vol backline kept Stanford from threatening for most of the evening. The Cardinal's (4-3) best look came in the 54th minute, as midfielder Shari Summers took a shot inside the penalty box that sophomore goalkeeper Jaimel Johnson knocked away for the save. In all, Johnson made four stops on the night for her third career shutout.

Johnson was taken down on a couple of occasions in the second half. The first came after a direct kick that Johnson was trying to corral when Allison Falk collided with the UT netminder, putting Johnson on the ground. After a brief stoppage, Johnson stayed in the match. She went down again later in the period, but no foul was called.

The best look for the Cardinal in the closing minutes came in the 83rd, as Falk's header opportunity went right after the cross off the Stanford direct kick.

Stanford out-shot Tennessee, 11-5, but the Lady Vols had the only two corner kicks in the match. The win was the Big Orange's first over the Cardinal in three meetings all-time and is the second of the season over a ranked team. Stanford falls for the third time this year, with all three losses coming against current top-25 teams.

In the first contest of the evening, 24th-ranked Boston University upset No. 3 Santa Clara, 1-0. Lauren Erwin's 63rd-minute goal broke up the scoreless tie and helped the Terriers to their second win over a ranked foe this season.

The Lady Vols face No. 3 Santa Clara on Sunday morning at 11 a.m. PDT to close out the 2006 Stanford Nike Invitational.
