Tennessee started out the morning with the top two finishers in the Collegiate Eight event. UT's "H.W.P.O." shell crossed the finish line first in 17:03, with the crew of sophomores Pam Harder (Mayette, N.J. ), Erin-Monique Shelton (Upper Hutt, New Zealand ), Alex Shishkov (Mississauga , Ontario ) and Kate Brownlee (North Gower, Ontario ), junior Kendra Warren (Franklin, Tenn. ), seniors Kristen Galloway (Knoxville , Tenn. ) and Katrina von Peters (Chattanooga , Tenn. ), sophomore Caroline Howell (Davenport, Iowa) and freshman Mary Dreusike (Huntington Station, N.Y.).
The "Quest" ranked second, with the team of freshman coxswain Katie Ross (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.), senior Renee Brittle (Dublin, Va.), junior Krista Gearing (Fenwick, Ontario), senior Rachel Mayberry (Woodbridge, Va.), juniors Genevieve Collins (Dallas, Texas) and Nina Dobratz (Portland, Oregon), senior Heather Hill (Knoxville, Tenn.), junior Mary Jones (Huntsville, Ala.) and senior Sarah Hutcheson (Orlando, Fla.) coming in at 17:11.
Next came the pairs race, where the eight Big Orange entries all finished ahead of the duos from Georgia Tech and Northwestern State. The second-team CRCA/Pocock All-American Shelton teamed with Shishkov to top the field with a time of 20:54.4. Next in were Dobratz and Hutcheson at 21:03.2. Brownlee and Brittle ranked third with a time of 21:10.2, while the pairs of Collins and Jones (21:11.4) and junior Leah Smelser (Macon, Ga.) and Gearing (21:17.2) rounded out the top five.
The Collegiate Fours race closed out the day, and Tennessee had two boats finish within two-tenths of a second of each other in the top two spots. The Ross-coxswained "Pride," manned by von Peters, Hutcheson, Warren and Collins, finished first in 19:37.0, just ahead of Harder's "Prowl," powered by Brittle, Gearing, Mayberry and Howell. Alabama finished third in 19:49.1, while UT's "Now" came in fourth, with the crew of senior coxswain Molly Oellerich (Arlington, Va.), Brownlee, Shishkov, Shelton and Smelser crossing the line in 19:50.2.
The Orange and White entered a non-coxswained four in the event, and the group of Dobratz, Galloway, Dreusike and Hill clocked in fifth at 20:22.0. In sixth with a time of 20:24.2 was Tennessee's "Squeeze," helmed by senior coxswain Stephanie Davis (Martin, Tenn.), junior Jessica Ayers (Alpharetta, Ga. ), sophomore Jocelyn Campbell (Memphis, Tenn. ), freshman Kate Snider and sophomore Danielle Hmielewski (Cookeville, Tenn.).
The unique day pitted teammates against each other in one race but put them back together in the next - but nothing but good things came from it, said Glenn.
"The team handled the competitive situation between each other very well," Glenn said. "They did a lot of good competing amongst one another and working with each other when the time called for it. They enjoyed it."
Tennessee continues the fall season at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, Mass., next Saturday and Sunday.
