UT's Jonathan Hefney returned Alabama's first punt 32 yards to the Tide 36-yard line but James Wilhoit wound up missing a 46-yard field goal. Late in the quarter, Bama's Jamie Christensen nailed a 24-yard field goal for a 3-0 Tide lead. UT drove to the Alabama 21-yard line but Simeon Castille intercepted an Erik Ainge pass at the Bama 4-yard line on the final play of the quarter.
KEY PLAY

Castille's interception. He stepped in front of Lucas Taylor on an ill-advised throw that cost Tennessee at least a game-tying field goal and perhaps a go-ahead touchdown.

KEY PLAYER

Bama tailback Jimmy Johns. He broke a 26-yard run to set up Bama's field goal.

KEY STAT

Ainge completed just 2 of 7 passes for 30 yards in the first quarter and threw an interception.

UT drove to a first-and-goal at the Bama 9-yard line but an ineligible receiver penalty forced the Vols to settle for a 27-yard Wilhoit field goal and a 3-3 tie. After an exchange of punts, Castille intercepted Ainge again, this time returning an overthrow 68 yards to the Vol 8-yard line. UT's defense held and Alabama settled for an 18-yard field goal by Christensen and a 6-3 lead. Tennessee drove to the Tide 43-yard line but Ainge was intercepted on the final play of the half, this time by Lionel Mitchell.
KEY PLAY

Castille's interception. Tied 3-3, Tennessee appeared to be driving for the go-ahead score with a first-and-10 at Bama's 41-yard line. Ainge overthrew Bret Smith, however, and Castille intercepted, then set sail on his 68-yard return. Ainge redeemed himself somewhat by bumping Castille out of bounds at the 8, saving a touchdown.

KEY PLAYER

Castille. His two first-half interceptions set up three Bama points and probably cost Tennessee at least six points.

KEY STAT

Tennessee limited Tide tailback Kenneth Darby to just six net yards on eight first-half rushes.

Hefney returned a punt 40 yards - punter P.J. Fitzgerald again saved a TD - putting the Vols in business on the Tide 34-yard line. Tennessee stalled, however, and settled for a 47-yard Wilhoit field goal that tied the score at 6-all. UT drove to the Tide 31-yard line but Ainge was dumped for no gain on a fourth-and-inches sneak. Bama converted the ensuing possession into a 69-yard touchdown drive, capped by a two-yard plunge by fullback Tim Castille with just 58 seconds left in the quarter. The PAT gave the Tide a 13-6 lead.
KEY PLAY

Bama wideout D.J. Hall (whose 43-yard catch set up Bama's game-winning field goal in 2005) outbattled Antwan Stewart and Jonathan Hefney to make a spectacular catch at the Vol 12-yard line. Bama scored its TD three plays later.

KEY PLAYER

Tide DB Ramzee Robinson. He made back-to-back pass breakups, forcing UT to settle for Wilhoit's second field goal. Robinson also stripped Vol wideout Josh Briscoe to prevent a possible first down.

KEY STAT

Tennessee was 0 for 3 on third-down conversion tries and 0 for 1 on fourth-down conversion attempts in the period.

An interfering-with-the-return man penalty at the end of a Bama punt gave UT the ball at the Tide 43-yard line. The Vols stalled yet again, though, and Wilhoit booted a 27-yard field goal that narrowed the gap to 13-9 with 8:18 to go. Tennessee got the ball with 6:40 to go and launched a game-winning nine-play, 70-yard TD drive. Arian Foster's one-yard dive gave the Vols a 16-13 lead with 3:28 remaining. Bama ran three plays and punted. UT ran three plays and punted back. Antonio Reynolds and Jerod Mayo sacked Bama QB John Parker Wilson once each to thwart the Tide's final possession and seal the win.
KEY PLAY

Down 13-9 with a first-and-10 at his own 42-yard line and six minutes remaining, Ainge scrambled to his right, then hit Robert Meachem with a 27-yard strike to the Bama 31-yard line. The Vols scored the game-winning TD six plays later.

KEY PLAYER

Ainge. After struggling for three quarters, he hit on 11 of 16 fourth-quarter throws for 114 yards.

KEY STAT

Tennessee gained 114 of its 124 fourth-quarter yards through the air, running for a mere 10 yards.
