Quarterly Report

What follows is an in-depth analysis of Tennessee's 31-24 defeat of South Carolina Saturday evening in Columbia. Each quarter is broken down into a recap, a key play, a key player and a key statistic.

The second scrimmage play resulted in a touchdown by Tennessee's defense. Syvelle Newton threw a pass to Freddie Brown, who lost the ball when hit by Jonathan Wade. Marvin Mitchell grabbed the ball out of the air and returned it 19 yards for a TD just 1:39 into the game. South Carolina advanced to the Vol five-yard line but Ryan Karl tipped a pass and Wade intercepted for a touchback. Tennessee went 80 yards in 10 plays and scored on a five-yard pass from Erik Ainge to Bret Smith.
KEY PLAY

The TD pass from Ainge to Smith. The ball should've been intercepted but Gamecock defensive backs Stoney Woodson and Emanuel Cook collided, and the ball was deflected to Smith in the back of the end zone.

KEY PLAYER

Wade. His big hit on Brown produced a touchdown (on Marvin Mitchell's return) and his interception saved a touchdown.

KEY STAT

South Caroline kept the ball 10:13 to UT's 4:47 but trailed 14-0 because of two costly turnovers.

Carolina's Ryan Succop boomed a 50-yard field goal on the second play of the quarter, narrowing the gap to 14-3. The Gamecocks closed to 14-10 on their next possession, going 80 yards in eight plays. The TD came on an 18-yard pass from Newton to Mike West.
KEY PLAY

The big play on Carolina's TD drive was a 29-yard pass from Newton to Sidney Rice. Vol cornerback Marsalous Johnson also came down with the ball but the dual possession always goes to the offensive player. Carolina scored its TD just three plays later.

KEY PLAYER

Newton. He completed four of five passes for 55 yards and a touchdown in the quarter. He also rushed four times for 11 yards in the period.

KEY STAT

Ainge. The Vol QB connected on nine of 11 passes for 99 yards in the quarter but UT's offense was stymied by five penalties that cost 40 yards and killed two drives.

Tennessee shot itself in the foot with penalties and a fumble at the Carolina 27-yard line. The Gamecocks took advantage by going 73 yards in five plays to take a 17-14 lead. The last three plays were Newton passes of 21 yards to Brown, 33 yards to McKinley and 15 yard to a wide-open Noah Whiteside.
KEY PLAY

Two huge mistakes kept Tennessee from putting the game on ice. Kenny McKinley fumbled a punt at the South Carolina 15-yard line and David Yance recovered for UT but the play was nullified by an illegal formation penalty. Three plays later UT's Robert Meachem fumbled a punt at the Carolina 27-yard line.

KEY PLAYER

Newton completed four of four passes for 83 yards and a TD on Carolina's go-ahead scoring march.

KEY STAT

Tennessee's offense managed just 53 yards all quarter. The Vols rushed four times for 2 net yards and passed 12 times (completing 7) for 51 yards.

A 12-yard TD pass from Ainge to Bret Smith concluded a drive that began in the third quarter and put UT on top 21-17. Moments later, South Carolina native Jonathan Hefney returned a punt 65 yards to the Gamecock 5-yard line. Arian Foster scored on the next play to boost the Vol lead to 28-17 with 10:25 to play. Carolina's offense stalled, and James Wilhoit booted a 21-yard field goal, padding the gap to 31-17 with 5:09 remaining. South Carolina promptly zoomed 95 yards in nine plays - Newton scoring from the 1 - to pull within 31-24 with 2:24 left. Bret Smith recovered the ensuing onsides kick. With Erik Ainge nursing an ankle injury, freshman Jonathan Crompton handed off three times, then UT punted. Carolina got the ball at its 10-yard line with 1:06 remaining but Demetrice Morley intercepted on the game's final play to seal the win.
KEY PLAY

Hefney's 65-yard return. He got a fantastic block from Meachem, who took out two Gamecocks.

KEY PLAYER

Hefney. His return set up what proved to be the game-winning touchdown.

KEY STAT

Carolina coach Steve Spurrier is now 1-6 vs. SEC foes when the opponent scores first. He's 7-0 when he scores first.
